Alchemy

About Project

This sculpture's fictional origin springs from a local tale: in 1986, resident Bevan Anderson discovered a mysterious 'gold-making' machine while clearing his grandfather's farm shed. This whimsical story, reported in the Gympie Times, sparked the creation of this intricate automata that blends historical narrative with mechanical artistry.

Rising from its base, the copper-domed viewing chamber houses an elaborate mechanical theater that brings the alchemical process to life. The piece features interactive elements including handles and levers that, when engaged, activate LED lighting sequences and set internal mechanisms in motion. Within the viewing chamber, a detailed sterling silver sculpture rotates, depicting the transformation of base metals into precious materials.

The sculpture pays homage to Gympie's gold-mining heritage while embracing contemporary technology. Through precision engineering and integrated electronics, Alchemy creates an experience that transforms mechanical interaction into moments of wonder, inviting viewers to engage with both the region's history and its technological future.
