Bubble Machine I

Play · Brisbane Festival Street Parade and LIVID, Brisbane

Bubble Machine I was built in six weeks for the 1996 Brisbane Festival Street Parade. It was made almost entirely from recycled parts of electric wheelchairs.

A driver sits inside a clear sphere on a low, sprung, wheeled chassis. Round dishes stand out from the sides and front of the sphere, and the front one holds the bubble mix. It drove the parade route at night and later rolled through the crowd at the LIVID festival.

It was the first of the Bubble Machines. Bubble Machine II followed in 1999, and Russell has been asked about the habit ever since: "So you built this Bubble Machine from scratch? What? You've built two? And you're working on a third?!"
