Charleville Milky Way Seat
Street Furniture · Public Art · Charleville, Queensland
A community arts project started by Charleville's Queensland Health office. The design tells a local Dreaming story of how the Milky Way was formed, shared by local Elders who gave permission for its use.
Designs for the seat and ground treatment were workshopped with local high school students, and Wally Wallwork and local Indigenous artist Phillip Collins painted the story in Spraycrete. The seat sits within it as the Milky Way, lit by a solar-powered star field of embedded LEDs and fibre optics. It was built locally with the help of retired tradesman Bob Richardson.
