Emergence

Public Art · Minchinton Street, Caloundra

Emergence is a public artwork on Minchinton Street, Caloundra, by Russell Anderson and Simone Eisler, commissioned directly by Sunshine Coast Council. Barnacle forms climb a standard street light, and smaller rosettes and discs are set into the brick garden walls along the street.

The forms were drawn in virtual reality and then textured in ZBrush. Russell drew everything up for production, fabricated the fittings and installed the work in August 2020.

It was the studio's first work printed directly in metal. The barnacles were printed in stainless steel. The bronze pieces were binder-jet printed, a steel and bronze composite, so they carry iron; it rusts, giving a patina no cast bronze would.

The barnacles hold LED pixels and an array of sensors. Barometric pressure, humidity and temperature readings set their colours, so the light shifts with the weather. Inside the globe of the street light, LiDAR senses people walking past and plays video-mapped footage of an octopus. The work is still running.
