Apparatus for Transtemporal Relocations of Impending Space

Apparatus · Public Art · Gardiner Station, Glen Iris, Victoria

Hidden beneath the floorboards of an old signal box, mysterious plans were discovered detailing an inter-dimensional transport device. According to the found manual, the apparatus could fold time and space, sending travellers by zeppelin, submarine, train, tram or automobile to one of several precisely tuned convergence points. The catch: no one could ever return from the leap, which may explain why the device was never put to official use.

The sculpture stands at a busy city station. VicRail asked that the original signal levers be kept, so they were re-engineered as the controls. Making heavy-duty railway levers safe for the public meant removing every possible entrapment point while keeping their authentic feel.

Pulling a lever sets the internal automata in motion and changes the sensor-driven ground lighting around the work.
