Apparatus for Germination of Achaemienis Ambulatii

Play · Apparatus · City Botanic Gardens, Brisbane

Part imagined history, part all-abilities sandpit. The germinator is the last remnant of the Botanic Gardens' Achaemienis Ambulatii Germination and Research Facility, built in 1872 to save the Pony Plant from extinction.

The Pony Plant was a terrestrial bromeliad and the world's only known walking plant, and its sturdy, ambulatory flowers could carry a small child. Unsurprisingly, its popularity in gardens and sideshows around the world led to its demise.

The sandpits sit at several levels so children in wheelchairs of different heights can play side by side, and a dripping water system keeps the germinator working.
