Riverbank

Public Art · Avalon, 100 Duporth Avenue, Maroochydore

Riverbank is a public artwork for Avalon, Mosaic Property Group's apartment development on Duporth Avenue, near the mouth of the Maroochy River. The art strategy asked for a sculptural screen around the fire hydrant booster cabinet that sits on the footpath beside the main entrance.

Russell worked on it with Maleny porcelain artist Shannon Garson. He did the design development and Form 15 engineering, then drew the cut files and built the screen. The brief set hard limits: non-combustible materials, clear access to the booster, and a driveway side at least half open.

The screen is laser-cut 316 stainless steel in 3 mm and 6 mm plate. Its fins are cut as wavering trunks and branches, and the lid is pierced with scattered pebble-shaped holes that throw spots of light. In the design renders, glass panels run around the top of the screen.
