The Splendid Distance Light Magnifier
Public Art · Apparatus · Maryborough, Queensland
The Splendid Distance Light Magnifier is a bespoke telescope made for museum display in Maryborough, commissioned by Fraser Coast Regional Council. It followed the Maryborough Match Making Machine of 2016.
The concept sheet sets out how it works. One handle varies the pitch of the telescope, another varies the yaw, and a third controls an interactive kaleidoscope.
The built piece has a copper and brass barrel carried in stainless steel rings, with kaleidoscope lenses set around a ribbed stainless frame. Russell drew it by hand in May and June 2018, then modelled and rendered it before building it in his studio.
