Sand Castle Competition
Public Art · Corner of Bay Terrace and Florence Street, Wynnum, Brisbane
Sand Castle Competition is artist Camille Serisier's giant bucket and spade on the corner of Bay Terrace and Florence Street in Wynnum, for Brisbane City Council. Her plaque reads: "This playful sculpture celebrates the beautiful coastline, rich history and laid back lifestyle of Wynnum. It references the Sand Castle Competitions held by the Telegraph and Courier Mail Newspapers during the 1930s, which were a regular feature of community life in the suburb."
Russell managed the project and turned the approved design into a buildable one. He drew the shop drawings, organised the Form 15 engineering with Lambert & Rehbein, fabricated the work and installed it. The bucket is rolled from 10 mm stainless plate with a lip of rolled angle and a handle of rolled stainless box section. The spade is fabricated from 10 mm stainless plate and NB150 stainless pipe cut in half.
Everything was powder coated in flat yellow, blue and red over a grey base, with an anti-graffiti clear coat. Camille taped the outlines and hatching herself at the powder coater, so the pieces look like drawn props. The bucket is filled with white concrete 'sand' that drains out the low point of the lip, and both pieces stand in a kidney-shaped concrete infill poured from a CNC-cut template.
